Before COVID, there was a teenie tiny part of us that actually appreciated how high the service fees were on major delivery service apps. After all, they were really the only thing standing between us and daily donuts or midnight shawarma, but now in 2020… we all deserve an affordable coping mechanism. Apparently, Calgary’s council agrees.
After a rare unanimous vote, city officials agreed that due to the current circumstance, it only made sense to request that Mayor Naheed Nenshi ask the province to cap sky-high delivery fees at 15%.

Now, we joke – but in actuality, the benefits of more affordable delivery transcend the wants of the hungry foodie. This decision could make a major difference to local businesses who are trying to keep their head above water right now.
The restaurant industry really has no other choice but to offer take-out and if people can’t afford the service fees, which nearly double the price of their meal in some cases, they’ll just stop ordering.
“This is not about demonizing the third-party apps. It is about supporting small local restaurants,” said Nenshi during the meeting.
If this was to go through, Calgary would join city’s like New York, Los Angeles, and Ontario; as well as BC and Manitoba who are also working towards a cap on service fees.
Times are changing, folks – hopefully for the better!
