Alberta beers win big at the Canadian Brewing Awards

Well, the Canadian Brewing Awards went down over the weekend, and the best beers in the nation have been named. With 55 different categories (yeesh!) ranging from porter to pale ale, your new favourite is bound to be on this list.
Here are our top choices for the Albertan winners.
Baltic Porter
Gold: Baltistar Galactiporter – Bent Stick Brewing Co. – Edmonton
This Edmonton nano brewery started in the summer of 2016. We don’t know what a Baltic Porter is, but we’re tempted to try it now.
Brown Ale
Gold: Bear’s Hump Nut Brown Ale – Coulee Brew Co. – Lethbridge
Living it up in Lethvegas, Coulee Brew Co. is a brewery first but also has a taphouse/grill in their facility. Make sure your friends at U of L know about it.
Scotch Ale
Gold: Andys Wee Heavy – Common Crown Brewing Company – Calgary
One of two awards that Common Crown took home this year. Like the Baltic Porter, we don’t exactly know what Scotch Ale is, but we’re now willing to try it.
English Bitters (Ordinary or Special Bitters / Best Bitter or ESB)
Gold: Warthog (English Style Mild Ale) – Big Rock Brewery – Calgary
Marketed as ‘Canada’s first craft brewery’, Big Rock has been a household name in Alberta for decades. If you’re curious, you can head over for a tour to see how the big dogs do things.

Silver: Forward Progress Pale Ale – Annex Ale Project – Calgary
The only silver on this list because we just like Annex so damn much. This fledging brand started in 2017, becoming one of the first to jump in on Calgary.

American Style India Pale Ale
Gold: This Must Be The IPA – Cold Garden Beverage Company Ltd – Calgary
By far the most eclectic brewery in the city. Our friends love this spot- they got to dog watch and can order pizza directly to their table.
American Style Imperial India Pale Ale
Gold: The Forgetful Brewer – Outcast Brewing – Calgary
Outcast has yet to start operations, but this is a pretty good sign that they know what they’re doing. Stay tuned- they’ll be setting up shop in the Barley Belt this June.
Smoked Beer
Gold: Prairie Fire Rauchbier – Town Square Brewing – Edmonton
Described as a smokey bacon beer, this offering from Town Square is perfect for those looking for a heartier beer experience. A beersperience, if you will.
Congratulations to all those that won (and placed) in their categories! Weirdly enough, Calgary is just getting into craft beer, so we’re expecting that the number of winners will do nothing but grow.
