Only days ago, it was announced that a Calgary company was named ‘Canada’s best brewery’ and now we’re getting called out again! This time by the Jim Murray Whisky Bible, an annually released guide to the world’s best whisky. And this year, first place was awarded to Alberta Premium Cask Strength, which is made and distilled right here in YYC by Beam Suntory.

“It is such an honour to be named World Whisky of the Year by Jim Murray and we are thrilled for our Alberta Distillers team,” said Albert Baladi, President & CEO, Beam Suntory in a release. “To receive this prestigious honour is a testament to the team’s dedication and passion for crafting a premium spirit of the highest quality and comes as at a time of Canadian whisky resurgence around the world.”

This is the 17th edition of the prestigious handbook and actually featured 1,252 different whiskeys – which is insane, because it was ranked and written by one guy. Wowza.

So, what sets Beam Suntory’s Alberta Premium apart from other beverages? Well according to Mr. Murray, this particular whiskey is “a succulence to the oils, balanced perfectly by ulmo and manuka honeys ensure for the most chewable Canadian mouthful possibly ever….and yet this is constantly salivating, from the very first nanosecond…Truly world-class whisky from possibly the world’s most underrated distillery.”

Yum.

When he likes something, he really likes something, folks. In fact, he’s such a fan of AP, this is the fourth time he’s featured it in his journal! From 2006 to 2009 it was named best in Canada, but if you’re still not convinced – they also won double gold at this year’s San Fransico World Spirits Competition.

Basically, what we’re getting at here is you’ve got to try this stuff. Alberta Premium Cask Strength is available at most liquor stores and retails for around $60 per bottle, but that varies depending on where you’re shopping.

To be honest, we were never really a fan of Whisky, but we may even give this one a sniff-swirl. It is the most “chewable Canadian mouthful possibly ever,” after all.
