With April almost upon us, so is the 5th anniversary of the Brentwood tragedy. In the spring of 2014, 5 lives were taken too soon. However, the victims’ friends and family are honouring their legacy in a beautiful and empowering way.

The Event

On Sunday, March 24th, join the friends, family, volunteers, and supporters of the victims at National on 10th. They will be hosting a bowling fundraiser for the Quinterra Legacy Garden, coming to South Glenmore Park this year. 100% of the funds raised on Sunday will go towards the Quinterra Legacy Fund.

Organized by friends and families of the victims, the QLF has become vital in funding the development of the Quinterra Legacy Garden. Hoping to break ground this spring, the QLF is aiming to raise $750,000 to cover the project’s capital cost, maintenance and programming costs. So far, $121,000 has been raised.

The Cause

The park will commemorate Lawrence Hong, Josh Hunter, Kaiti Perras, Jordan Segura, and Zackariah Rathwell. Additionally, the new space will support the arts, mental health, youth, families, and the community at large. The park will represent unity and love while reflecting each of the victims’ personalities.

Even the park’s design elements will embrace the motif of the number 5. From the number of branches, leaves, and roots in the logo, to a five-pointed star on the stage, to five chairs placed in front of the five flowering trees in the garden, every aspect of the park will represent the lives of the victims. Overall, the Garden will be a place for friends and families to come together and spend time with one another.

Various activities will be offered once the park is opened, all pertaining to the arts, music, and creativity. Whether you’re participating in drum circles or yoga sessions, you will be sure to feel the love.

Calgary still aches for the 5 bright lives that were taken too soon. However, something bright is emerging from this dark memory. Whether you can attend Sunday’s event, or give to Parks Foundation Calgary, every donation counts!
