Why LUZIA in Calgary might be Cirque du Soleil’s best show yet

We have to admit, we haven’t been to a Cirque du Soleil show in quite some time. Like, years. So, when we were invited to take a peek behind the scenes of LUZIA and chat with one of the artists, we jumped at the opportunity. An inside look at the best circus in the world? How could we pass it up?

When we arrived at the Big Top (aka Le Grand Chapiteau), we were reminded that this is an absolutely massive production. With 45 artists and over 120 staff, LUZIA requires roughly 60 trucks to move around, including one dedicated to the water portion of the show (but more on that later).
As we entered the artist’s tent, we were struck by the complexity behind the scenes. Training sessions, seamstresses and stagehands moved about with purpose. We guess that when it takes 6 months just to train properly (not even mentioning how long it would take to create and choreograph), the show needs to be as sharp on its 100th as it was on opening night.

Rightfully so, since LUZIA is a truly unique Cirque du Soleil production. First, using a cultural inspiration has only been done once before (for their first show). Second, fully incorporating rainfall is a first in the travelling circus world. And trust us, it is fleshed out as well as any other act.
Sitting down with Kris, an artist for both the Adagio performance and the Swing 360 act, we could tell that he was just as enthused about LUZIA as we were. A former sports acrobat in Poland, Kris possessed deep respect for both the technical skill of his fellow artists and the story that LUZIA managed to weave with them.

And there was no better test for a show about Mexico than a 3-city tour in the country. Fortunately, the audiences there loved them just as much as those in New York or Montreal did. From standing ovations to fans asking for autographs, it was clear that the attention to detail in every aspect of the production paid off.
When we asked Kris about his favourite act, he couldn’t give a definitive answer. And it took us seeing LUZIA in full to understand where he was coming from. Why? Because Kris looks for moments that engulf the audience, not simply the displays of technical ability. No, that’s too straightforward.

He personally loves the moment when the singer goes a capella just before the aerial straps in water routine. We loved the Russian swing and the Cyr Wheel routines. But honestly, time and time again we just found ourselves staring in awe at what was happening on stage.
That’s kind of the point of the circus though, right? A dazzling display of skill and beauty that leaves an impression that can last for years. If we, as jaded 20-somethings (the worst) are able to feel that during the final curtain, then chances are high that you will too.
