Cineplex announces that their movie theatres will no longer offer TimePlay

Well, it’s tough not to feel as though the hours and hours that we’ve spent watching BTS footage, commentary videos, and reviews were all for nothing. After six long, wonderful, years of popcorn prizes and head to head comps with pre-show host Tanner Zipchen, Cineplex has made the decision to end TimePlay and if we’re being honest, this hit us surprisingly hard.

“After nearly 32 million games and over 330 million SCENE points awarded, the end of 2020 will see the final TimePlay game played at Cineplex Theatres,” they said on their website.

Now, although they didn’t say so in their statement, one can only assume that this has something to do with COVID. Theatres have basically sat vacant since the beginning of all of this, and without people rushing to the theatre early to play the trivia game, there really is no reason to pay for the pre-movie service.

On the bright side – it looks like TimePlay is still operational online, with games going live once a week. Truth be told, it is a heck of a lot harder to cash in on any Scene points because you’re playing against 100 other people, but it might fill the void.

No matter, it certainly won’t be the same for fans of the experience when Canadians return to their seats, but it’s understandable. We’re hopeful that in time, it will make a comeback – once we settle into a new normal… one where we can enjoy a large layered butter snack, a recliner seat and a silver screen.

Until then, you’ll be missed TP.
