Guide: 5 Japanese dishes you need to survive winter

Since February has been too cold to do anything and we’ve watched all that Netflix has to offer, we’ve focused our energy and attention on eating…everything. With cold weather comes full bellies, and we’ve been very ok with that. Where have we been taking care of our current obsession? 5s17, of course.
Here is the scoop on the 5 items we have been obsessing over:
J.F.C

Japanese fried chicken with their homemade chili goma sauce. Chicken? Tender. Breading? Crisp. Sauce? To. Die. For. Seriously, folks, this appetizer is the perfect combination of salty and spicy, and we can’t get enough. The chicken is moist (gross word, great chicken), coated in a perfectly crunchy batter (which is also available gluten-free), then topped with chili goma sauce. Have we mentioned that all of their sauces are homemade, too?
Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich

Pulled Thai chicken in teriyaki sauce on a brioche bun topped with togarashi mayo with your choice of side. We recommend the fries because dipping them in togarashi mayo is an experience you can’t miss out on. This meal is also only $10 during lunch Mondays to Fridays.
Build Your Own Poke Bowl

You can choose one type of seafood, one starch, one sauce (although their homemade sauces are so good, it’s hard to narrow it down to just one), and two vegetables. Our go-to order is the wasabi soy salmon, rice, house sauce AND chili goma (we are sauce bosses, don’t hate), the Asian slaw and avocado. If you’re feeling famished, supersize your order to the Mt. Fuji size. You won’t regret it.
Chili Goma Ramen

Made with tonkotsu broth and filled with noodles, a soy-infused egg, sprouts, scallions, spicy cream pesto, and togarashi. This soup makes a serious statement. That statement is WOW (cue Owen Wilson). This dish also comes available gluten-free!
Yuzu Baked Cheesecake

This cheesecake is finished with a fruit compote and yuzu cream. 5s17’s take on this classic dessert is something totally unique to your taste buds, and it’s only $6. $6!!!!!! The flaky crust is somehow so delicate while still delivering a scrumptious (yes, we said scrumptious) crunch. The cheesecake filling is potentially the creamiest thing we’ve ever tasted. Don’t believe us? Well, you’ll just have to head down and try it for yourself.
Talking about all these delicious dishes has worked up quite the appetite, so you can find us down at 5s17 eating our hearts out. See you there!
