Explore (and drink) your way through Alberta’s rum-running history at this local distillery
Did you know that Calgary has one heck of a rum-running history? Actually, Alberta and British Columbia both do! And Romero Distilling Co., a relatively new distillery in Calgary, is using a bit of that history to create some very Canadian, very delicious rum along with one of the coolest distillery experiences you can find.
Sitting right by the Calgary Farmers’ Market off of Blackfoot Trail SE, Romero Distilling Co. is as accessible as can be. It’s a family-owned and operated company run by a father and son duo that uses nothing but Canadian ingredients and equipment for their rum-making process. Oh, and even more impressively, they start and finish their rum right on the property.
Typically, a tour of a new distillery or brewery can be, well, uninteresting for the general public. It’s not that the process behind building a tasty beverage isn’t cool, it’s that people are usually more interested in drinking their drinks than learning about them. That’s not the case at Romero. Yes, you’ll (definitely) want to drink your drinks, but trust us when we say you’ll be very interested in what these tours have to offer.
You’ll be able to sample their spirits and handcrafted cocktails, learn a lot more about Alberta’s rum-running history, and, if you choose to do so, even get to make a blend of your own! Tasty rum and true crime sounds like a heck of a time, doesn’t it?

Standard Tour & Tasting – $15 per person
– A formal tasting of their Rums and Sugarcane Spirits
– A tour of the distillery while learning of the rum-making process in detail
– Run through Alberta’s untold history of rum-running during the prohibition and the country’s most notorious rum-running murders
Custom Blend Tour – $75 per person
– You will get to make a bottle of customized sugarcane spirit by blending a variety of spice infusions and flavours (like vanilla, caramel, nutmeg, cloves, and more) all into one bottle, that you get to cork, label, and take home.
– Distillery tour to check out the equipment and technology as you learn about the process and sample infused and flavoured sugar cane spirits.
Custom Cask Tour For 2 – $2500
– This very special experience is for the fanciest of rum tasters out there
– An intimate experience for 2, complete with a private tour, tasting experience, and 40 bottles of custom finished rum (after one month of maturing)
– You’ll also receive the custom branded cask that your custom rum was aged in!
