Behind the scenes at an iconic Calgary sandwich shop

Is it weird that we feel closest to the big person upstairs whenever we step into Holy Grill? Is admitting that sacrilegious? Will our editor decide that this is funny enough to keep in the article or will we have to rewrite the beginning? All these questions and more are about to be answered.

Holy Grill has been an institution since all the way back in 2003 when the brothers behind it decided that Calgary needed a spot for inexpensive, delicious sandwiches downtown. Little did they know just how right they were.

Let’s start with the breakfast options. From eggs bennies to the classic Nicmuffin, Holy Grill has perfected the savoury stuff. Personally, we’re big fans of the South Beach Benedict, but you can’t really go wrong.

Don’t have to go to work anytime soon, either? Mix in their Holy Bacon Caesar, and thank us for the tip later.

Next up are their sandwiches. Served inside a wrap panini-style, they pack just the right amount of flavour in a great size. Trust us, there’s a good reason why they are busy practically every day of the week at lunch- people just can’t get enough.

Finally, their burgers are great for those who want to mix things up a little bit. Juicy patties are paired with some fresh toppings, then served inside a custom kaiser bun. Add a little bag of their beetroot or sweet potato chips, and you’ll be floating back to the office.
And we will be right there with you.
