A look inside Calgary’s most authentic Texas BBQ spot

Well howdy there, pardners. With only 45 days till Stampede, we’re getting in a Western kinda mood. And what better place to do that than at Hayden Block?! This Kensington staple is absolutely killing it in the Texas BBQ game.

With a Western-themed room– sorry, saloon– filled with wooden tables, friendly faces and bull’s skull decor, it’s definitely not an uppity joint. However, it is up there on our list of Calgary restos, and a big part of it is thanks to their crazy happy hour and delicious, fall-off-the-bone meats.

If you’re into woodsy char and intense flavours, eating here might just make your day. Cuts from brisket to turkey to short ribs spend up to 14 hours in the Memphis-style smoker. What’s that, you ask? Well, it’s an amazing cooking tool that’s capable of housing 675 pounds of meat. Holy smokes.

Meanwhile, the whiskey bar overflows with delicious sips and handcrafted concoctions. American, Scottish, Japanese, Canadian, Irish; you name the whiskey, and Hayden Block’s got it. Try hand-picked draught or wine on tap since there are incredible specials daily!

Pro tip: stick around till after 10 pm for half price meats in the Whiskey Garden. Trust us, you won’t wanna miss it.
