When was the last time the Flames were this good?

The Calgary Flames have officially won the Western Conference regular season title, as well as their first divisional title since 2005/06. A lot has changed since then, for better or for worse, but mostly in very interesting ways. Right around the time the Flames won their division that year, Mission Impossible III was about to come out, and Daniel Powter’s Bad Day dominated the charts. Oh, and Pluto was also downgraded to a ‘dwarf planet’, so it was a weird year all around.
That being said, the 2005-2006 regular season was a good one for the Flames, and they had a few legends (some more infamous than others) that we feel deserve a nostalgia-trip.
With the Flames playoffs coming up right away, we’ve decided we should probably take a look back at the last time the Flames did this well in the regular season. So, with that in mind, here is what the last division-winning Calgary Flames looked like!
Mikka Kiprusoff – 42 Wins/2.07 GAA

Calgary’s favourite keeper (no offense, Mike Vernon) had an incredible season in 05-06, winning the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender. We miss those Kipper chants every day.
Jarome Iginla – 35 G/ 32 A/ 67 P

In a bit of a down year, Iggy only managed 67 points in 05-06. He would go on to score at least 89 points in each of the next three years, but no matter how much he was filling the scoresheet, he was our captain through and through.
Dion Phaneuf – 20 G /29 A /49 P

The bruising d-man had a rookie year to remember, potting 20 goals from the backend and laying out practically half the league. This is the Dion we thought would be the future of the Flames.

Darren McCarty – 117 PIMs

The Flames toughness was delivered mainly through the grit of long-time NHL grinder, Darren McCarty. Sure, he will always be known more for his days in Detroit, we were still pretty happy to have him lead the way in fisticuffs for the Flames all season long.
Tony Amonte – 14 G/28 A/42 P

What’s a division-winning team without a couple of hard-nosed vets? Not a division-winning team. That’s why additions like Amonte were so necessary for the Flames to make their mark on the 05-06 season.
The Calgary Flames also iced players such as Robyn Regehr, Roman Hamrlik, Kristian Huselius, and of course, Daymond Langkow. It was a solid year for the Flaming C, but one that ultimately ended in a first-round loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Here’s hoping that this year we’ve got the right mix to make a red-mile drive worth remembering!
