How was your week, Calgary? Ours was fantastic, partly because of our March Madness bracket staying strong, but mostly because Huawei Canada sent us to Paris for the launch of their new flagship smartphone, the P30 Series. Boy oh boy, people, this thing changes the game. Now, we’re typically attached to our Apple products because we’re trendy and relatively mindless when it comes to tech, but if anything is gonna make us cut the Steve Jobs-cord, it’s the P30.

Curiocity loves photos, so it’s obvious that our main focus on the trip was to see just how well we could capture Paris with the P30. Not only was the phone gorgeous and easy to use, but the camera also made us feel like our photog skills went 0 to 100 real quick. Since Huawei has partnered with Leica to make an industry-leading camera in their smartphones, we feel like we’ve gotta show you just how good our trip looked through the lens of the Huawei P30.

Here’s a few snapshots of ours, as well as just a sample of the incredible things the Huawei P30 Series offers.

Photography: Optical Zoom

If snapping a pic of the moon is something you do on the daily, then we’ve got some news for you: the pic of a blurry pinhead in the sky that you keep spamming your followers with is no more! Huawei’s P30 Series has a 4-camera system that enables up to 50x optical zoom on photos, which is legitimately insane.

What’s that we’re looking at? Oh, just a casual 50x zoom of the moon taken on a fricken’ smartphone. Sorry, not just any smartphone, the Huawei P30 Pro. Or, as we like to call it, the Huawei P30 “kiss your DSLR goodbye” Pro.

Photography: Night Mode

One thing that we think will really stir the photo-taking masses is the new Night Mode. Tired of struggling with low-light captures, blacked out landscapes, and hitting your friends in their red-eyed faces with constant flash? Yeah, so were we. Until, that is, we got our hands on this phone.

Here is an example of the capability of the Night Mode. The first picture below is of the famed Sacré Coeur Basilica taken at night by professional photographer Rudy Pilarski. You can imagine this was passed through a couple editing processes after being taken by a pretty impressive (and pricey) DSLR setup.

Nice, right? Well, below is a pic of the Sacré Coeur, taken a full two-hours after sunset by our Managing Editor with the P30 Pro. No editing, no tripod, and no offense, but no professional photography abilities here.

If that shot doesn’t convince you that your night photos aren’t about to blow people away, we aren’t sure what will. Honestly, snapping that photo right there made us feel like we could point and shoot the P30 at just about anything and it would look great.

Guess what? We did, and it does.

Oh, and here are a few more snaps with the Huawei P30 Pro from our Paris trip that knocked our socks off:

Videography

Whether you’re aspiring to be the next Jordan Peele or just like making pretty vids for social, the Huawei P30 Series has you covered in spades. Advertising itself as “a smartphone camera with cinematic capabilities”, the P30 isn’t messing around. It’s got next-level image stabilization for action shots and the SuperZoom lens lets ya get up close and personal in all those embarrassing vids of your pals. It’s a ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ type of deal with this phone.

Oh, the phone also has it’s own AI Video Editor, so you can add music and chop up your vids to make ’em ready for any social channel or medium you want to share ’em on. Not bad at all!

Our Thoughts

To keep it short, we love it. Sure, we didn’t dive into the tech-specs of the Huawei P30 Series, but that ain’t our specialty.

What we can say is that in our short test run with the phone thus far, we love it pretty thoroughly. As non-android users, the interface is beautiful and easy to navigate.  As well as this, the in-house apps are efficient and fast, and, as you can tell, the cameras are miraculous.

The phones run between around $580 to $1200 Canadian depending on the model and are available in the Breathing Crystal and Black colourways.

We’ll keep an eye out on more info, but in the meantime, keep an eye on @curiocitycalgary for some unreal shots from the Huawei P30 Series.
