Help send a Canadian National Team to the Olympics

Even with two ice hockey players and one ringette player in our office, we collectively tense up every time we think of field hockey. While we understand people’s ignorance of the sport, it is absolutely no joke and rightfully deserves a place on the Olympic stage. The sport requires incredible stamina, high dexterity, and most importantly, shins made of steel.
Which is why we are bummed to hear that even though the Women’s National Team is the best they’ve been in the past two decades, they might run out of funding before they get the chance to qualify. We’re not kidding either, the last time Canada’s women team competed in the Olympics was 1992, when they came 7th in Barcelona.

The team has doubled down in anticipation of the 2020 Olympics, moving to Belgium and The Netherlands to compete in the European club scene, while still being able to practice as a team 3 times a week. Frankly, teams don’t get better in a vacuum, they must play against the best in the world to be the best in the world.
And it’s looking more and more like Canada’s women team could be just that. They’ve got two opportunities to qualify for the Olympics. The first is the FIH Hockey Series Final, which goes down in Spain at the end of June. If they don’t succeed there, they will need to win the Pan-American Games in Peru during July and August.
Let’s be honest with ourselves. If this was an ice hockey team, even at the Junior level, the community would ensure that they got what was needed to compete. Should we, as Canadians, let one of our national teams down? We don’t think so.
