A gold medal from the 1988 Calgary Olympics just sold for $15,000

Have you ever thought about how much your most prized possession would be worth if, for some reason, you had to pawn it off? Well, if your most cherished item was a gold medal won in the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, it would be worth just over a whopping $15,000.

According to an auction house based in Boston Massachusetts, they actually sold the shiny hardware for an incredible $15,365, to a nameless buyer. What’s even crazier? It was actually worth an estimated $20,000+. What a bargain.

The item was offered as part of their Olympic memorabilia sale that was held earlier this month and was reportedly won by the Soviet Union in the 4 by 7.5-kilometre biathlon relay race. Unfortunately for those curious cats out there, they never mention why, exactly, it was being auctioned off in the first place.

If we had won anything in the Olympics, anything at all, you can bet we’d keep it forever on display in the middle of our living room. We can’t imagine ever getting rid of something like that!

Other items sold in this particular auction included another gold medal that was won in the 1908 London Olympics, which went for $33,000 and the torch from the Oslo 1952 Olympics, which sold for (we hope you’re sitting down for this one) $55,000. Oh, the things we would buy if we had Olympic torch money. Wow.
