YYC’s annual National Indigenous Peoples Day event to be held online!

Via Aboriginal Awareness Week / Facebook

As we’re sure all of you are already aware, celebrations and annual events are going to look a little different this year. However, despite the lack of physical gatherings, it’s important to acknowledge important events! This June, Calgary is celebrating Aboriginal Awareness Week, which runs until the 21st.

Since the early 1990’s Calgary has seen colourful, proud commemorations leading up to National Indigenous Peoples Day, which is held on the summer solstice. This event is beautiful, so it’s a shame that it won’t be taking place as it traditionally would.

Instead of holding it outside with crowds of people,  NAAWD will still be held online!  This year’s virtual experience will feature storytelling, dancing, singing, and a pipe ceremony, just as it has every year before this one.

“Our Elders and traditional teachings encourage us to acknowledge our resilience in ‘Keeping the Circle Strong’ for generations and we will continue to do so for generations to come,” organizers said on their website. “In ‘Keeping the Circle Strong’ we honour the past, present, and future of our communities and continue to walk in the footsteps of our grandfathers and grandmothers.”

If you would like to take part in these celebrations you can visit the Aboriginal Awareness Week Website here, at 9 am on Sunday, June 21st, 2020.
