Calgary earns a ‘C+’ in physical distancing over long weekend

Well, the results are in, folks! Despite studying for May long weekend for over a month, Calgary only earned a C+ in physical distancing from Chief Tom Sampson of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency.
“I’m proud of the work we did overall, I think it’s good, but more effort is required,” he said during a regularly scheduled press conference.

According to Sampson, 77 complaints were made about people using playground equipment, 135 warnings were issued, and 5 tickets were written for people who had open alcohol in public parks. Not bad for a long weekend!
As for Calgary’s businesses, 43 complaints were filed and 13 of those were given warnings. Also, 107 other routine inspections found that people were definitely complying with public health orders, which is fantastic news!
Only two businesses, both massage parlours, were ticketed and ordered to close, as they were not included in phase one reopening of the economy.
Sampson concluded the press conference reminding people to remain two metres away from others and to wear a mask in public where that might be difficult.
All in all, we did alright, folks! We’ve still got a long way to go in our Calgary physical distancing journey, but we’re getting better! We’ve got this.
