Unfortunately, despite us singing our hearts out in the shower, we weren’t nominated for a Juno this year. Apparently, it takes a lot more grit, determination and maybe even some talent to score a nod. Maybe we can learn a thing or two from Alberta artist Celeigh Cardinal, who just received her very first nom this year.

Cardinal, who grew up in Grande Prairie and then moved to Edmonton, is up for Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year for her (relatable) album, Stories from a Downtown Apartment.

We’ve got a couple of those! None that would make an appropriate song, let alone album, though. Man Screaming in the Alley at 3 am on a Tuesday would probably be our first single.

The soulful singer says she really began to pursue music after she made the move south, and credits training with Canada’s Music Incubator (CMI) for helping her learn the business side of things. Show business is tough, kids.

In the last 5 years, she’s been able to work as a full-time artist and eventually go on to hosting a radio show on CKUA, where she plays all Indigenous music every Friday.

You can catch the Juno Awards hosted by Alessia Cara and maybe Celiegh’s first win (fingers crossed!) Sunday, March 15th, when they’ll be broadcast from Saskatoon. Good luck, girl! We’ll be rooting for you!
