Calgary’s tiny home village for veterans will be first one in Canada

Well, this might be the sweetest thing we’ve ever heard. ATCO and a partner organization have been building entire communities of tiny homes for homeless veterans across Canada and they’ve just completed the very first one right here in Calgary.

This village, built by the Homes for Heroes organization includes 15 units meant to help veterans adapt to civilian life; something that can be extremely difficult, particularly for those who have served overseas.

The village also has a resource center and a counselor’s office in hopes to help heal the psychological scarring that may make life outside of the military tough. It’s much too often that veterans return from service to find that getting and maintaining a job is extremely challenging.

Tiny homes

The interior of the homes are modern and feel much more spacious than they actually are. Each home is under around 300 square feet and includes a spacious deck, kitchen, bathroom and a safe place to sleep. Which really, is everything anyone could need.

The tenants for this particular village were chosen by the Mustard Seed who partnered with Homes for Heros to also assess the needs of those experiencing homelessness.

The Calgary Village will officially open and have tenants move in on November 1st with an Edmonton community to follow. There’s still a long way to go, but this is a step in the right direction for helping the 3,500 veterans displaced across Canada.
