Inside Calgary’s Nightmare Before Christmas inspired pop-up bar
Not everyone is an “Elf on the Shelf, Love Actually, slippers by the fireplace” type. In staying true to their brand, Calgary’s premier dark-horse cocktail lounge has painted the holidays black. This year, Shelter is paying homage to the Tim Burton classic Nightmare Before Christmas, with a one-of-a-kind December pop-up.
Shelter has seriously gone over the top with its moody yet festive decor. But they didn’t stop at the charcoal coloured gift boxes on every table, the multitude of Santa hats, or at the hundreds of candy canes strung from the ceiling, oh, no.

They also flipped their entire menu for this month only. Get naughty with their yuletide Cocktail list, which now includes items like the ‘Drunk Uncle’ and ‘Tequila for Christmas’. Every drink packs a 2 oz punch and honestly, it’ll be pretty tough to choose only one. If we’re being real with you, you’re likely to leave fa-la-la-la-la-lit. But hey, ’tis the season, right?
If the Oogie Boogie man isn’t the only thing grumbling under the table, and you’re overdue for a bite to eat, guest chef, Mikko Tamarra, has developed an entire seasonal carte du jour. Try one of their tacos or satisfy that sweet tooth with their incredible mini-doughnuts, you won’t regret it.
