A squad of weed-whacking goats is now roaming McHugh Bluff

The city’s expanding its workforce. And sorry folks– you can’t apply for the job unless you’re covered in fur and let out the occasional baa. Seems slightly discriminatory, but it makes sense when you realize that the city’s unleashing herds of goats and sheep to maintain McHugh Bluff.

No, we’re not kidding. Our parks are gonna start looking a lot like Butterfield Acres since roughly 200 hoofed pals will be grazing out in the open. If you’ve seen this before, it’s probably because the project first piloted at Confluence Park in 2016. Now, they’re going bigger and goat-ier than ever before!
We’d love to pet the little guys, but the City says they’re not there to be distracted (sigh). The hungry fellas are super effective at maintaining healthy green spaces, but only if us onlookers don’t feed and harass them.

The goats are baaaa-ck.🐐 A herd of around 200 goats are set to return to McHugh Bluff to help control weeds & support habitat restoration work happening in the area. Remember that they’re here to work, so give them space to do their job safely. https://t.co/DeZcGSkNiu

So how do they do it? Well, the goats essentially go to town on the bad weeds without affecting the native plants the City wants to keep. This means more native vegetation, more healthy wildlife habitat, and more ~biodiversity~.
What do you think of the idea, Calgary? Personally, we’re thinking it might be the GOAT. (Sorry, we couldn’t resist that one.) Catch these goats at McHugh Bluff until mid-August!
