Our Packwood Grand style guide for dressing up at the derby
The Packwood Grand returns to Calgary this weekend and promises to be the “must-attend social & lifestyle event of 2019”. That miiiiight a little bit of a reach (our bday party was obviously the biggest must-attend), but we’re happy to help you look as good as possible when you head down there.
Before we get into it though, here’s a little refresher on what you’re getting yourself into. The Packwood Grand is a classy affair. (If you read that in a British accent, you’re on the right track.) Expect a gentrified atmosphere somewhat like the Kentucky Derby, brunch, drinks, and lots of references to vacation homes. Oh, and horse names like Bodacious Tatas, That’s Whatshesaid, and Turducken. We’re not even joking.
Anyway, here are some top tips for looking great at the Packwood Grand.
Start sharp
Flex outfits always need to have a good base. Guys, whether you’re picking a linen suit or going more casual with a camp shirt, make sure it fits properly and matches your colour palette. Ladies, don’t hesitate to step a little outside of your comfort zone. Trust us, you won’t be the zaniest person there by a long shot.

Accessorize
It’s the accessories that set people apart at events like these. Sure, you need to have a great hat, but we think that should be only the beginning. Guys, find yourself a solid silver ring or a light chain. Pocket squares don’t hurt, either. Ladies, now is the time to splurge on that LV or Gucci accessory you’ve been eyeing up for the past few months.
Confidence is everything
And we cannot stress this enough. Honestly, fashion has become so democratic in the past few years that you can wear pretty much anything and rationalize it. That’s truly the secret here- gone are the days of the ‘standard’ outfit, and we love it.
So, there are our three top tips for shutting the game down at the Packwood Grand. Now, all you need to do is find yourself a really nice cigar and convince a security guard to let you smoke it in the stands. Not too close to Junkinthetrunk, though! He has sensitive lungs!
