East Village introduces its newest art installation

The East Village just got even cooler with the addition of a familiar but wicked public art installation. The piece goes by ‘Device to Root Out Evil’ and sits right in 5th Street Square. Oh, and it’s pretty dope, of course.

Previously, this installation had actually been set up in nearby Ramsay from 2008 until 2014. It’s also spent time in Venice and Vancouver, along with having been rejected by Stanford. Obviously, we’re hoping this art installation has found a long-term home in the East Village.

Interestingly, a comment on the East Village Instagram mentions that the piece has been leased under a cost-free, five-year agreement, so we might be getting lucky. Happy to hear it!

Not only has this new East Village art addition made its way around the world, but it’s also made a few people angry (hence the Stanford rejection). Created by American artist, Dennis Oppenheim, ‘Device’ is obviously a commentary on religion or parts of it. Some people have taken exception to this, with Vancouverites back in 2008 going so far as to vote for its removal from the city.

Hey, your loss is our gain, Vancouver. After all, it is better than the East Village throwing a blue ring in the centre of their hood.
