Ever since Danny and Sandy had that iconic drive-in movie date, we’ve wanted to recreate the scene. Gotta get that summer lovin’ in some time, right?! Luckily for us Calgarians, there’s a bunch of outdoor film events to pick from over the next couple months. Stay tuned for 10 flicks to catch under the stars!
Movies at the Meadows
A large screen, a car full of your crew, and a classic blockbuster playing. What could be better?! Spruce Meadows is offering up a drive-in experience for just 20 bucks a vehicle, so don’t miss your chance to watch something wicked! The experience will run from mid-July to early August.
Bed Cinema
So it’s not 100% guaranteed that this experience is coming to Calgary, but we sure as heck have our fingers crossed. Ain’t nothing better than curling up under the stars in a California King, right? Sign up for their info list for pre-release tix– if everything gets the green light, we should be in business come August!
Rooftop Yoga & Movie Nights at Junction 9
Each month this summer, from June to September, hit up Junction 9’s rooftop to sweat it out and cozy up with a killer movie! All you gotta do is bring your mat, a fave blanket, and cozy pillow. Juice and kombucha will be available for purchase, and popcorn will be provided!
Kensington Summer Outdoor Movies
Throughout August, BYO-Chair to Calgary Parking Authority Lot 57 to watch something on the silver screen. Last year hot popcorn and sweet southern iced tea were free, so we’re hoping things work out that way for summer 2K19.
Watermark’s 7th Annual Movie in the Park
The Watermark at Bearspaw’s 7th Annual Movie is much more than just a show. With face-painting, a magic show, $2.00 glasses of wine, popcorn, cotton candy, hot cocoa, and food trucks, it’s pretty decked out. Keep your eyes peeled on their site for more info on this year’s event, probably going down in September!
Fresh Air Cinema
Feeling boujee? Make your own big screen event happen with Fresh Air Cinemas! They provide giant inflatable movie screens, projectors, sound systems and generators to set up open-air theatres. You can rent ’em yourself, or follow their social for info on when their next show is hitting YYC!
Secret Cinema
Due to copyright reasons, the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF) can’t tell you what movie’s playing. Hence the “secret” thing. But we’re pretty sure it’s cool. Beer from Village & popcorn will be available for sale, so don’t miss it! Screening starts tomorrow with Family Squeezed Lemonade! Other dates include June 2, July 18, August 15, and September 12!
Movies on The Rise at St. Patrick’s Island
We’re really hoping Movies on The Rise comes back, ’cause we absolutely loved it last year. Gather under the stars in the 9-metre-high natural amphitheatre and enjoy a heck of a show.
