Surprise! Solar panels could work wonders for Calgary

An undergraduate student at U of C has found that one of the sunniest cities in Canada would benefit from solar energy. In other news, windy places might benefit from windmills and large rivers might benefit from hydroelectric dams.

We’re just goofing around, and we’re happy that steps are being taken to identify just how much of an impact renewables might have on Calgary’s power demands. Now let’s put some solar panels up in Calgary and HARNESS THE ENERGY OF THE SUN.

After all, we have every building and piece of infrastructure we need, we just got to get these bad boys (the panels) set up!

Frankly, the student’s research was pretty darned nuanced, as it identified the average solar panel availability per capita for both residential and commercial rooftops and projected the impact it would have on Calgary’s power demands (hint: 23%, nothing to shake a stick at).

However, instead of just incentivizing private residences to install solar panels, either with cash or a reduced power bill, the government of Alberta should look to the massive industrial and commercial complexes throughout the province.

Think about the almost empty New Horizon Mall, just slap some panels on that bad boy and boom, you’re at least doing something instead of waiting for our economy to recover to the point where we need two massive malls outside of Calgary.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed that the city, the public, and the energy sector can all agree on the best way to utilize this and finally get some solar panels in Calgary.
