Alright, folks. Prepare yourselves, because it’s going to be a pretty crazy week for our province. A little over a week ago, Premier Jason Kenney announced that on Monday, February 8th (today) Alberta would be entering the very first phase of our new “step-by-step” plan to flatten the curve, alleviate a little stress and get things back to normal – whatever that means.
Unlike our previous plan, this particular ‘program of sorts,’ will not move forward based on case numbers. Instead, the province will enter each phase based on how many people are admitted into the hospital for COVID-19.
Today, as part of phase one, the government has allowed businesses like restaurants and gyms to reopen, but with various restrictions in place to ensure everyone continues to stay safe throughout the process.

Here is everything that will be included in the first phase of Alberta’s plan to ease restrictions:
RESTAURANTS AND BARS
Restaurants, pubs, bars, lounges, and cafes are now able to open for in-person service, as long as each table does not exceed 6 people. Individuals must be from the same household or if you live alone, may include yourself and two close contacts. Liquor services must end at 10:00 PM with dining closing at 11:00 PM, and one person from each table will be required to give their contact information. Also, entertainment (pool tables, VLTs, etc.) will not be permitted.

RECREATIONAL FACILITIES

Indoor fitness centres are now able to open, however:
- No sports games, competitions, team practice, league play, or group exercise of any kind is allowed.
- Only one-on-one training will be permitted (e.g. fitness in dance studios, training figure skating on ice, one-on-one lessons).
- Sessions have to be scheduled or by appointment. No drop-in or groups allowed.
Also, all sessions must be done at a distance of 3 metres, trainers must be professional and have to remain masked the entire time.
Unfortunately, individual workouts without a trainer will not be permitted.
INDOOR OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AT SCHOOLS
As of today, children’s sport and performance activities will be permitted if related to school activities, such as physical education classes and k-12 schools as well as post-secondary institutions may use off-site facilities to support curriculum-related activities.

In addition to this, hair salons, reflexology, barbershops, nail salons, piercing and tattoo shops are also open for one on one service; and outdoor gatherings are now permitted as long as they do not exceed 10 people – who are all physically distanced.
Indoor gatherings will still be prohibited, and people must still abide by social distancing and mask mandates, but this is all still pretty major!
Now, just because we’re moving forward certainly doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods. Make yourself feel at home… just don’t put your feet on the coffee table. Alberta COVID restrictions are meant to protect us, so it’s important that we continue to follow them! This will be over soon, but until then, support a local restaurant, roast some s’mores with your pals and wash your dang hands!
