Ya know, we’ve been trying our whole lives to earn a super cool nickname or title, and nothing has ever stuck. The moon on the other hand? Well, it has several. For example, tonight’s glowing disk is often referred to as the Full Wolf Moon, and here’s why!

According to The Old Farmer’s Almanacwolves are heard howling to the January moon more often than the others.

Traditionally, this was actually believed to be the result of winter hunger, which is incredibly sad. Luckily, this was debunked, as those who study the animal now know that they also howl to assert themselves, locate pack members, reinforce social bonds, and to coordinate a hunt.

Will this moon in particular look any different? Well, unfortunately, for those in need of some space action, the answer is no. The Wolf Moon is just another full moon, but now you guys know!

Other fun names that the January moon goes by? The Cold Moon, Frost Exploding Moon, Freeze Up Moon, Severe Moon, Hard Moon, and Centre Moon – all of which emphasize how freaking cold this month can get.

Anywho, check it out! It will technically be its brightest at 12:18 PM MST, but you’ll definitely be able to see it in all of its glory tonight when the sun goes down.
