This week’s rare Harvest Full Moon will be the first of two big full moons this month

We’ve said it once before and we’ll say it again. If nothing else, 2020 has brought some incredibly cool space-type events. We’ve seen meteor showers, comets, and more rare phases of the moon than we can count on one hand, but the universe is far from done grabbing the attention of us humble earth dwellers. On October 1st, lift those peepers to the sky for the Harvest Moon, the first of TWO full lunar events this month.

Now, you may be asking “what the heck is a harvest moon and why should I care?” and that’s fair. To some, a full moon is just another full moon, nay, nay. This one is special!

A ‘harvest moon,’ is what the farmers who were planting crops later into nighttime would call the full-bodied bright one closest to the beginning of autumn and this month, thanks to a once-every-three year blip on the calendar, this particular harvest moon is 30 days late. Also, as we said earlier this will be the second big bright baddie this month. Fun right?

To see it at peak illumination on the big day, tilt your head upwards at around 5:06 pm (ET) – tt’s early, we know, but we don’t make the rules. Then, see the second full moon right on Halloween (October 31st), check it at  10:51 am (ET). We promise it’ll be well worth the peek, folks!
