Banff to repurpose shipping containers to build more affordable housing

We’ll admit it, we’re totally guilty of watching upcycle videos on YouTube. A 45 minute how-to on turning peanut shells into a coffee table? Consider us hooked. We honestly think nothing should go to waste and with the right people on the job, anything is possible! In fact, the YWCA of Banff actually just broke ground on a repurposing project of their own – except this one is bigger, better, and unlike anything that you’ll find on a Pinterest board.
Using old shipping containers and pro builders, the little mountain town has actually begun building 33 beautiful but more importantly, affordable homes for their lower-income residents.

In a release sent out this week, the province said that not only would this community cost the town less to build, it could also be maintained and lived in reasonably due to its net-zero energy footprint. Who doesn’t love a win-win!
The cost of the total project is projected to be about $7 million dollars and create over 50 jobs for local residents, which is also a good thing!
Considering nearly 60% of people who live in Banff only make minimum wage, this could be huge – so we’ll be happy to see it, ya’ know, when it’s actually completed in October of 2021.
Until then, happy building YWCA Banff. This is a pretty great idea in our books.
