As if East Village wasn’t already cool enough, now it’s getting an 80 million dollar, shape-shifting, multi-use parkade and creative space. Looks like we’ll be spending even more of our life down in east downtown… but we’re not really mad about it.

The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation will be building the new parkade at 9th Ave and 3rd Street SE. It’ll be hooked up with 500 parking stalls across five levels, but there will also be an “innovator hangout” called Platform on the 1st and 2nd floors.

But since autonomous vehicles and constant Ubering might be in our future, the parkade will be built so that it can be converted to a residential, commercial or mixed-use building.

Architects Kasian and 5468796 designed it to be a cool space for events, farmers markets and community gatherings, so we expect at least a few bashes to go down there. Who knew a parking lot party could be so hip?

CMLC plans to break ground on the 250,000-sq-ft project in 2019. Keep your eye out for it in the new year!
