200 goats were just released to control weeds in this Calgary community

They’re “baaaaaah”ck! In order to control weeds, while also supporting habitat restoration, the City of Calgary has reintroduced nearly 200 goats, yes GOATS, to the community of McHugh Bluff.
Until July the 23rd, the goats will be able to graze as they please. By letting them snack their way through McHugh, the city will be able to manage more invasive weeds, like the Canada thistle, yellow clematis, and creeping Bellflower, all without the greenery that they want to keep around. Smart right?
This is actually the third year in a row the city has put a herd of four-legged Billy’s on their payroll. In order to continue doing this year after year, it is important that Calgarians keep a respectful distance from both the shepherd and the animals.

They’re here to do a job, folks! You wouldn’t go into your friend’s workplace unannounced in the middle of the week, to take pictures with or pet them, would you?
If you really feel the need to get close-ish and personal with these 9-5 critters, it’s asked that you view them in their pens at the camp on the east end of the park.
Other things to keep in mind when in the area? Please have your dog on a leash at all times! There will be two horses and a trained canine working with the goats, and distractions should be limited.
Those on bikes are asked to slow down and should obey any and all signage, fencing, and closures. Lastly, and this should really go without saying, don’t feed the goats! The whole point is to keep them munching on native weeds and plants.
What a project, hey? If you’d like more information on how the herds of goats are helping the City of Calgary with naturalization, you’re encouraged to check out their official website here!
