Sad news, varsity stick handlers, fanatics, Beckhams and quarterbacks. Canada West, an organization that oversees the scheduling of university sporting events in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, has unanimously decided to cancel all early-season games and tournaments in 2020.

“As Western Canada continues to work through the ongoing impact of COVID-19, university sport will look very different this fall,” they say in the press release.

In a vote 17-0, CW decided it would be best for everyone if they did not resume until it was safer to do so. The fall season would have included football, soccer, rugby 15’s and field hockey games.

As for university-level golf, cross country and swimming championships, the organization has said it will have made a decision on whether or not to proceed by July 15th.

The upcoming hockey, basketball, volleyball seasons; as well as varsity wrestling, track and field, curling and women’s rugby 7’s will be reviewed by October 8th of this year, which we’re hoping will just fly by.

Luckily, for those who are anxious to get back in the saddle, decisions to begin training again for their respective sports will be made by members. Of course, this will also depend on university policies, as well as public health officials, but we hope for their sake it’ll be sooner than later.

These are trying times, folks, but you have to actually trust that Canada West knows what is best. As we said, 2021 will be here before you even know it, and maybe you’ll be even better prepared!
