Racism happens everywhere, every day, including on professional sports teams and towards respected athletes. In an effort to change this Matt Dumba, Evander Kane and other well-known hockey players, both past and present, have announced the formation of the new Hockey Diversity Alliance.
The goal of the newly formed HDA is to act as a positive influence not only in hockey but on society as a whole. By inspiring and educating the current and future generation of players and fans, they hope to eradicate bias and promote equality. We like the sounds of that.

In the press release, shared on social media, Kane and Akim Aliu have been named co-heads, with Dumba, Wayne Simmonds, Chris Stewart, Joel Ward and Trevor Daley acting as the executive committee of the Alliance.
“Although we will be independent of the NHL, we are hopeful that we will work productively with the league to accomplish these important changes,” they say in the statement.
“We are hopeful that anyone who puts on skates, or sits in the stands will do so without worrying about race, gender or socioeconomic background; and will be able to express their culture, identity, values and personality without fear of retribution.”
Society has a long way to go, but we’re glad we have incredible leaders to guide us, and everyone else through it. We can, and will do better. We need to. Congrats guys, this is amazing!
