U of Calgary develops COVID testing method that only takes 30 minutes

More great news out of Calgary laboratories in the status of their fight against COVID-19! According to the University of Calgary, researchers have developed a new method of testing someone with the coronavirus… and it only takes 30 minutes. Nicely done!
Surprisingly, this new method doesn’t even require high tech equipment or the chemicals that we’ve previously used. Plus, a lot of those are in limited supply around the globe. This is huge, guys!

Using a technique that they call loop-mediated amplification, they can now detect the virus from a nose or throat swab and are able to see results with the naked eye.
Now it’s important to note that the test is still considered to be in it’s earlier stages and will require more work, but they hope to have a model for what they’re calling a ‘handheld cartridge test’ available by the end of the year!
Congrats on your findings, U of C! We can’t wait to see where this goes. Improving the way we go about testing for coronavirus could actually change everything!
