YYC pushes #supportlocal harder than any other Canadian city on Twitter

Local businesses have had to make major adjustments since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to survive. Many of them are taking to Twitter in order to communicate with customers, advertise, and in some cases, entertain. According to recent analytics, Calgary actually has done this exceptionally well, pushing the hashtag #supportlocal more than any other city in Canada.
In an email to Curiocity, it was revealed that “the Hashtag #SupportLocal has grown by +29% between the months of March and April in Calgary and has been mentioned the most in 2020 out of any Canadian city.” Well done, Calgary!
Companies like Calgary’s Annex Ale and Hippo Hug blankets were two standouts, who have both been extremely successful at rebranding, remarketing, and re-working their entire business plan.

Microbrewery, Annex Ale, has begun making and selling canned sanitizer, and Hippo Hug has turned their sights to making personal protective equipment, in addition to their weighted blankets. Talk about quick thinking, folks.
Calgary’s local businesses are amazing, but we’re still working through this, guys! We’ve got a ways to go until our city is bustling about like it was a few months ago.
It’s important that we continue to support YYC-based stores and restaurants if we want to come back to a thriving community!
