Well, someone had to be first. Saskatchewan is implementing the first phase of its 5-phase plan to reopen the province’s economy on May 4th.

On Thursday, Premier Scott Moe and Saskatchewan’s top medical official, Dr. Saqib Shahab, announced the initial steps of the reopening plan. The multiple phases are intended to slowly allow non-essential businesses to reopen and to loosen other restrictions.

In a quote from a news release, Moe stated: “over the next several weeks, restrictions will be gradually lifted by adding more types of businesses to the allowable businesses list, meaning that they can reopen if they so choose.”

That being said, “all businesses and public venues will be required to continue following physical distancing” practices for the foreseeable future. As well as this, they will be held to strict cleaning and disinfection practices.

Obviously, anyone experiencing any sort of COVID-19 symptoms is still fully expected to stay home. This “reopening” is absolutely not a complete removal of current restrictions, rather a strategic approach to jumpstart the province’s economy.

Here is what Phase 1 of the plan will include:

  • A reopening of medical services including dentistry, optometry, physical therapy, opticians, podiatry, occupational therapy, and chiropractic treatment.
  • Low-risk outdoor activities like boating and fishing will have facilities opened
  • Campgrounds will open for booking online, camping available on June 1
  • Golf courses will be able to open with restrictions starting on May 15

Although Premier Moe said that it wasn’t his intention to be the first province to reopen, he does see immense value in getting Saskatchewan up and running again.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this initial plan plays out. We’ll keep you updated on the situation as more information comes to light.
