New bars and restaurants calgary

Man, are we spoiled for choice. New bars and restaurants have opened up all over the place with cool concepts and (not so hidden) hidden entryways, magical additions, and incredible food and drinks. We figured it was as good a time as any to put them all into one place, for your convenience. Maybe you can make a checklist out of it! Here are 10 new bars and restaurants to check out in Calgary.

RAIN DOG BAR

Rain Dog is exactly what we needed during this unpredictable winter. They serve up hardy meats and tasty comfort foods, and they’ve also got a rich selection of Albertan craft beer. Their decor is very Sherlock Holmes library meets pool hall chill. It’s an antique-heavy joint with a warm atmosphere and a calming vibe.

Where: 1214 9th Ave SE, Calgary

PB AND J YYC

No way, no way. PB and J YYC is a bran-new breakfast joint. This place is making adults feel like kids and making kids feel like they’re at a 5-star restaurant. Their menu includes items like Cherry on Top, a peanut butter sandwich with cherry jam and coconut, and the Canadian, an almond butter sandwich with walnuts and maple syrup. Delish.

Where: 1119 Kensington Road NW, Calgary

PUBBLICO ITALIAN KITCHEN

Pubblico is a breath of fresh air. There are a few things that drew us to this Italian Kitchen. It’s new, it’s also in a gorgeous building in Marda Loop and the interior is stunning, but above all else, we heard the burrata was amazing. What can we say? We’re suckers for cheese.

Where: 2018 33 Ave SW

THE POTION ROOM

Out of all the new Calgary bars and restaurants on this list, we’re probably the most excited about The Potion Room. It’s a bit of a tight squeeze, but we guarantee any Harry Potter superfan will enjoy this place. It’s not the size that matters, it’s how you use it, and man did they do the absolute most. The ceilings and walls are covered in callbacks to the magical series, and even plays a loop of the movies on massive screens lining the bar.

NUPO

Nupo Calgary people at cocktail bar

Nupo is an earth-friendly hot spot in YYC’s East Village. Here you can dive into plant-based dishes or sushi made with fresh, sustainable fish using Canada’s very first dry-aging chamber, and sip on creative cocktails or exclusive sakes.

Where: 624 – 6th Ave SE, Calgary, AB

EIGHT

EIGHT is actually hidden behind Nupo, so of course, we had to add it to the list even though it kind of feels like cheating. Don’t get these two twisted, they’re totally different. This aptly named spot is an interactive restaurant that is extremely minimal and totally food-focused. All dishes are inspired by Canada and made with fresh local ingredients, which we can totally stand behind. Also, this spot only seats 8 at a time and requires a reservation. Consider EIGHT, Nupos high brow sister, that runs in an exclusive-type crowd.

Where: 635 Confluence Way SE, Calgary

AJITO

Who wants to enter through a door anymore? At Ajito, Calgary’s newest Japanese resto, the magic begins before you’re even seated. In order to enter this place, customers will actually have to locate the Coca Cola fridge at the back of Sho Sushi and climb through. Ajito serves authentic Japanese-style food. We’re talking sushi, authentic rice and noodle bowls, and incredibly inventive cocktails. Yum.

Where: 7212 Macleod Trail SE, Calgary

LATELY: REINVENTED

We stan reinvention! They may have only opened back in September, but they’re already at it. Who says you can’t make a first impression twice? Lately now has a new menu, a new concept, and a resto-selfie room! As if their sleek digs weren’t Instagrammable enough, they’ve added an entire space dedicated to sprucing up your social feed.

Where: 1438 – 17 Ave SW, Calgary

CAFE ALCHEMIST

feature

Cafe Alchemist is a kind of coffee shop/5-star resto hybrid. This place has globally-charged chef-inspired “cuisine,” which they describe as fast-casual food that pushes the boundaries. Their menu is small but mighty and offers a selection of wraps and sandwiches that you can either take to go or eat in.

Where: 850 2 Street Southwest, Calgary

VEGAN STREET

We couldn’t be more excited because Calgary’s very first full-service vegan cocktail and snack bar is here! Plant based-food truck favourite Vegan Street opened their first brick and mortar! But don’t worry, they will still feature familiar items like their mac and cheese veggie burger, tasty tacos and a wide selection of poutines, they’ve just added a selection of vegan beers, wine, and cocktails!
