Study finds which Christmas traditions Canadians are keeping and ditching

Which Canadian Christmas traditions are standing the test of time? Well, spoiler: “Merry Christmas” won over “Happy Holidays.” Read on to see which traditions Canada is passing along, and which we’re passing on.

A majority of respondents said that Christmas traditions in Canada were more about festivities and fun than faith, so what gives? Today, we’re going to talk about holiday traditions. And thankfully, we can use the new report from the Angus Reid Institute to help us out. Score!

The classic Christmas tropes are still in full force. Getting together with family for dinner is super popular (89%) and most (77%) will get a tree this year. While not as many are putting stockings beside the chimney, that percentage is still over half.

Considering some rituals are as strong as ever, it might be weird to hear about others (like attending church) are falling by the wayside. Without going too deep, we simply attribute this to the rise in non-denominational traditions, even if they have religious or spiritual roots.

Will Christmas eventually become Halloween? Maybe, but we don’t think it will happen anytime soon. While more and more Canadians shift towards celebrating holidays in a secular way, some roots go extremely deep. Also, most Canadians still report looking forward to the holidays and their festive traditions.
