Construction has begun on Calgary’s first luxury hotel in 20 years

Via PBA Land and Development

Well, it took over a year, but after breaking ground last May, construction for The Dorian, Calgary’s first luxury hotel project in two decades, is now underway!

According to the team working on the site, The Dorian is expected to be so much more than just another building in the city skyline. The 27-storey mammoth of a hotel could inject upwards of $110 million into the local economy and will create hundreds of jobs during the two-year building period.

“We’re looking to the future because we see real opportunity in tourism.” Said PBA’s Sr. Vice President Andrew Boblin. He believes tourism “will translate into billions of dollars in economic activity for this city,” and it just might.

The Dorian

When The Dorian is completed in 2020, the city will have 307 new high-end suites in the core. This is in hopes of satisfying visitors expecting an extravagant Calgary experience. Of these suites, 133 rooms will be Luxury Marriott Autograph plus, with the rest being Marriott Courtyard Rooms. Fancy.

Pleasing the “boujee-er crowd” could mean a significant boost in tourism. This is something the city has been hoping to drive towards and diversify. According to the Conference Board of Canada Visitor spending could grow to $2.1 million this year, and surpass $7.9 million by 2020. Decent numbers, don’t ya think?

The Dorian will cater to two different styles of traveler, blending old and new into a hotel that captures the vibrancy of the city. Fingers crossed it ends up as nice as it sounds!
