The City of Calgary’s new #buylocalyyc campaign meets mixed reviews

The City of Calgary has launched a new program to help smaller businesses, but it looks like their efforts may just be rubbing salt in the wounds of local owners. #BuylocalYYC is a movement created to help Calgarians identify and source local businesses by offering small companies marketing tools and “come in, were local” signage. Sounds, like a nice plan, right? Well, not everyone thinks so.
So far, people have been pretty quick to point out that owners may have an issue putting a banner in a window of a space that they can’t even afford.
There is nothing that says “supporting local businesses” like raising property taxes by 50% or more…

“The best way to help Calgary’s economy is by supporting local businesses…” Also, not taxing them out of existence would help. — Mark O’Henly – Oil Baron (@SeeClickFlash) November 5, 2019
No business can survive 200% tax hike/year.
I have a small rental property, the property tax from $79/month (2017) to $230/month (2019).

How about #yyccc quit taxing the hell out of them? The Mayor and most councillors don’t have a clue. — Dale8yyc (@dale8yyc) November 5, 2019
Yeah, honestly, we’ll level with you. Although the whole “buy local” message is obviously positive, finding positive feedback online was a little bit tough.

We’re always proud of the city we’re headquartered in, but even more when they launch amazing initiatives like #BuyLocalYYC to support local businesses. #BuyLocalYYC it takes passion and courage to start your own business and that’s why our shopkeepers work so hard to support local makers! We need to show small biz that we see them, we’re with them, and we want them to keep going! — Alice (@alamyyc) November 5, 2019

Of course, the movement shouldn’t be lost in the eye of the storm, #buylocalyyc! There’s nothing like a twitter roast to unite a group of people, right? After all, the idea is commendable and signage or not, we always want to plug local businesses. Heck, we are one!
